About the Boca Grande, Florida Area
Gasparilla Island's unspoiled white sandy beaches and blue-green waters have drawn people to its shores for over 7,000 years, but it is during the last 100 years that the island has seen its most tremendous growth and change. From 3 small fishing villages, this barrier island has grown to become an international destination for the rich and famous. Over 7 miles long and a half-mile wide, the island is home to nearly 6,500 residents during peak winter season and about 1,000 year-round residents. The island's uniqueness is no secret to those whose families have grown up here for generations, or the many winter residents who escape to Boca Grande. Boca Grande, the island's centrally located village, is where the bulk of the shops and restaurants are located, although there are shops and other businesses at both the north and south ends of the island. Luxurious residential mansions and historic "cracker" homes run the entire length of the island.
